Do you need an app?

One of the many considerations of the digital age is how much attention people play to their mobile phones. Technology is so fundamental to the daily lives of so many people now, that you find WiFi hotspots in the most obscure places, just so that people can remain online and in-touch.

The age of the app

One of the many considerations of the digital age is how much attention people play to their mobile phones, enthralled by an app. Technology is so fundamental to the daily lives of so many people now, that you find WiFi hotspots in the most obscure places, just so that people can remain online and in-touch. Perhaps you’ve been sat in a coffee shop somewhere and seen at least a dozen WiFi connections pop up.

What you may also have noticed, is that all the big companies have their own app. These are now just as much a part of people’s day-to-day life as the internet connection that they downloaded the apps from. Amazon, Tesco, Starbucks, HSBC – all of these huge names have their own apps. These days, you can even pop to Wetherspoons and order your meal from your phone without any need to interact with another person. Your first thought here may be that I’m saying that mobile applications are reserved only for biggest companies. The reality couldn’t be further from the truth. Apps are available to anyone who wants one. The question is whether or not your business needs one.

Do I need a mobile app?

The short answer here: not necessarily. Although it seems like you can’t survive in the modern day without one, that’s absolutely not true. If you want a mobile application, the Autonomous Digital team are absolutely capable of catering to this desire. It would be easy for me to sit here and tell you exactly why your business needs an app. However, as the Senior Developer at AD, I’m not just looking for dollar signs. What is important to the team here is that we establish a relationship with you and your company. We need to nurture that relationship so that both parties can benefit from it. In order for our business to do well, we have to ensure that your business thrives from our services too.

So when do I need one?

The most crucial factor to an app is that it has a unique selling point. That is something different, something that your website can’t do. When we produce websites for clients, we ensure that they work as well as they can on as many devices as possible, including your phone. If your website functions efficiently on a phone, and your app offers nothing different, then it serves no real purpose. The Google Play Store does not approve every app that apply to be listed. In fact, if your app is just the same as your website, it’s quite likely to be rejected. The consideration, then, is what your app can offer that would be difficult to implement on a website.

Colleagues or Clients?

I’ve already talked a lot about apps where clients are concerned, and the Google Play Store. That is not, however, the extent of what apps can offer. They can also work on the business side to streamline processes and reduce workloads, printing costs and much more.

Perhaps you have a warehouse where you need to do a stock take. Your colleagues have to write your figures down on paper, the go and enter them on a computer. Imagine the reduction in long-term cost if your colleagues had a tablet in their hand. Everything they needed to do could be done from there. Now apply that to any business situation you want and think of how such an app could help.
